xarch . information system I’m not even trying to translate the press release or any project descriptions for xarch (experimental servers for architecture). Literally fabricated at the height of digital pretence these network lyrics were designed to convey the unprecedented, or so we thought … The facts: Started in 1994 xarch (gained consciousness and:) connected to the internet in December 1995. Host to approximately 5000 websites it handled on average 11000 requests per day. At the time xarch was quite possibly the largest hub for architecture and AutoCAD related information in the WWW. The project received a prix multimedia art award from the Austrian government in 1998 [...] Despite its physical location at the University of Technology in Graz and the generous access to their internet backbone connection, xarch maintained its sovereignty throughout. All machines were student owned and operated. In terms of programming, content and conduct anything was possible. The preliminary guidelines just stated: Don’t get us into trouble … I do not recall how and when THEY got me involved, but with reasonable certainty I can claim to have started coding somewhat before autumn of 1996 and I ceased to actively participate in summer of 1999. All notable omissions on my part are simply due to incompetence, for this is not my (heroic) tale to tell … | |

In September 1997 an open air multimedia event located in the historic Landhaushof in Graz presented xarch among other architectural istitutions and initiatives to a general public.
